The company reported a total net revenue of $5 billion.
Hasbro’s 2023 financial results highlight a significant divergence between the company’s struggling core business and its high-performing digital gaming segment. While the company reported a 15% year-over-year decline in total net revenue to $5 billion and a net loss of $1.49 billion—largely attributed to the divestment of its eOne film and television division—the Wizards of the Coast and Digital Gaming segment emerged as a primary growth engine. This specific unit saw its annual revenue climb 10% to $1.45 billion, bolstered by a 49% increase in digital and licensed gaming revenue, which reached $385.1 million.
The success of Baldur’s Gate 3 served as a critical catalyst for this growth, contributing approximately $90 million in licensing revenue to Hasbro between its August 2023 launch and the end of the year. Management anticipates that the title will continue to generate revenue throughout 2024, albeit at a lower volume than its initial release window. This performance has reinforced the company’s strategic pivot toward interactive entertainment, with leadership signaling plans to leverage the Dungeons & Dragons franchise through multiple video game releases over the next decade.
In addition to Baldur’s Gate 3, the licensing of Monopoly Go! to Scopely has become a cornerstone of Hasbro’s digital strategy. The game generated over $800 million in global revenue for its developer in the fourth quarter alone, providing Hasbro with a recurring, high-value revenue stream. These results underscore a broader corporate transition, where digital licensing and interactive media are increasingly relied upon to offset volatility in traditional toy and entertainment markets.
