GeoPoll
It aims to bridge the gap in reliable market data.
The 2024 African Gaming Industry Report, unveiled at the Game Developers Conference, provides a comprehensive analysis of player behaviors and market potential across the African continent. The research aims to bridge the gap in reliable market data, which has historically hindered investment, by quantifying the habits of the region’s rapidly expanding digital-native youth population. The findings underscore Africa’s emergence as a significant global gaming market, with industry revenue projected to exceed $1 billion for the first time in 2024.
The study utilizes data collected from over 2,500 gamers across Nigeria, Egypt, Kenya, and South Africa. The methodology, led by mobile-based research agency GeoPoll in collaboration with the Pan Africa Gaming Group, highlights a mobile-first landscape where 92% of respondents play on mobile devices. Engagement levels are notably high, with 32% of gamers playing for three or more hours daily. Furthermore, the data indicates a maturing consumer base, as 62% of participants have previously purchased games or engaged in in-game transactions.
Beyond usage statistics, the research explores cultural and social dimensions, including player attitudes toward violence, the representation of female characters, and the demand for locally relevant content. The report concludes that the combination of high smartphone penetration—which currently outpaces that of the United States, Canada, and Mexico combined—and a growing middle class positions Africa to fundamentally transform the global gaming landscape. These insights serve as a critical resource for stakeholders seeking to understand the unique dynamics of the African market and the potential for gaming to function as a medium for community building and cultural expression.
