DEV – Asociacion Espanola de Empresas Productoras y Desarrolladoras de Videojuegos
The Spanish video game industry represents a significant economic force, characterized by 815 active studios primarily clustered in the hubs of Catalonia and Madrid. As of 2023, the sector generated €1.425 billion in turnover and supported 10,259 direct jobs. Despite this steady growth, the industry remains heavily reliant on a small number of large-scale companies, while the broader ecosystem faces mounting financial pressure. Over half of all studios report negative impacts from the post-pandemic economic climate, with a vast majority expressing concern regarding their long-term viability.
Structural challenges continue to hinder the sector’s full potential, particularly regarding talent acquisition and capital access. Approximately 45% of studios struggle to recruit qualified personnel, citing a disconnect between current training programs and industry requirements. Furthermore, the workforce suffers from a notable gender imbalance and a lack of junior professional integration. Financial stability is similarly strained, as public funding reached a five-year low in 2023, forcing firms to rely on internal resources and project-specific grants rather than broader tax incentives.
To secure future competitiveness, the industry is increasingly turning to technological innovation, with 54% of studios integrating generative AI into their daily operations. Strategic advocacy remains focused on securing institutional support, implementing robust tax incentives, and refining educational pathways. If these systemic reforms are successfully enacted, projections suggest the sector could quadruple its turnover and more than double its total employment by 2030. Achieving this growth will require a concerted effort to bridge the current talent gap and stabilize the financial landscape for small-to-medium-sized developers.
