The video game industry in the Valencian Community represents a burgeoning, highly internationalized sector characterized by a young, creative ecosystem. As of 2017, the region hosted 90 studios—comprising 60 established companies and 30 emerging entities—that collectively generated 10.1 million euros in revenue and employed 466 professionals. With over 80% of these firms founded within the last decade, the industry is currently in a critical phase of transition, aiming to scale from a collection of experimental micro-enterprises into a sustainable, globally competitive economic force with revenue projections reaching 20 million euros by 2020.
Despite this momentum, the sector faces structural hurdles, most notably a reliance on self-financing and founder capital, which limits long-term business viability. The industry is further challenged by a significant gender gap, with women accounting for only 17% of the workforce, and a persistent mismatch between the skills provided by the region’s 20 educational centers and the specific commercial demands of the market. To overcome these barriers, the ecosystem requires a shift from a product-centric, amateur mindset toward professional business management, improved access to private investment, and the attraction of larger anchor companies to stabilize the local market.
Strategic development is currently supported by a robust framework of public and private initiatives, including accelerators like Lanzadera and funding programs managed by regional entities such as IVACE and Las Naves. To ensure long-term consolidation, the region must leverage these resources to foster cross-sector synergies, particularly in applying gaming technology to education and health. By implementing targeted fiscal incentives, enhancing professional training, and increasing industry visibility, the Valencian Community aims to solidify its position as a key hub for digital innovation, ultimately transforming its creative potential into lasting economic growth.
