The layoffs impacted high-profile, long-tenured employees, including lead producers and quality assurance managers.
Cloud Imperium Games, the developer behind the long-running project Star Citizen, has confirmed a series of layoffs as part of an internal restructuring effort. The studio stated that the primary objective of these changes is to improve operational efficiency by co-locating key development teams. While the company characterized the reduction as a small number of positions, the move has drawn significant attention due to the departure of several high-profile, long-tenured staff members, including lead producers and quality assurance managers.
The layoffs, which occurred in early 2024, have been linked by former employees to a mandatory relocation policy. Reports suggest that many US-based staff members were unable or unwilling to move to the studio’s Manchester, UK, office on short notice, leading to their termination. Some former employees have characterized these departures as a mass layoff disguised as a relocation initiative, further alleging a difficult internal culture.
These events follow a period of significant financial growth for the studio, with Star Citizen’s total crowdfunding exceeding $667 million as of early 2024. Despite the recent staff reductions, the company maintains that it continues to recruit for key roles. This development marks a shift from the studio’s previous stance in 2023, when it denied reports of mass layoffs, attributing minor staff changes at that time to the integration of the newly acquired company Turbulent and a strategic focus on team co-location.
