When players see themselves in a character, they are more likely to spend impulsively and report higher satisfaction. This psychological connection is critical for market success.
It's like buying clothes that truly reflect your personal style, making you feel good about the purchase.
Core finding. Character design that fosters high self-identity congruence is the primary driver of impulse spending and player satisfaction.
Character design serves as a primary catalyst for revenue generation and consumer engagement within the competitive landscape of freemium, gacha-based mobile gaming. By analyzing the behavioral patterns of 488 Generation Z players in Indonesia, it becomes clear that the psychological connection between a player’s self-perception and the symbolic representation of in-game characters is a critical driver of market success. When players perceive a high degree of congruence between their own identity and a character’s image, they are significantly more likely to engage in impulse spending and report higher levels of overall satisfaction.
While symbolic character representation effectively fosters player satisfaction, it does not independently trigger impulsive financial transactions. This distinction highlights a nuanced consumer psychology where aesthetic appeal builds long-term brand affinity, but actual spending remains tethered to the deeper, personal resonance of self-image congruence. Furthermore, the data indicates that while satisfaction is a robust predictor of positive word-of-mouth advocacy, the act of impulse spending itself does not inherently enhance a player’s satisfaction. This suggests that players maintain a level of deliberate decision-making even within the high-pressure environment of gacha mechanics.
Ultimately, these findings underscore the necessity for developers to prioritize character design that facilitates personal identification rather than relying solely on superficial visual appeal. By aligning character narratives and aesthetics with the self-identity of the target demographic, studios can cultivate a more satisfied player base that actively promotes the game through organic word-of-mouth. These insights provide a strategic framework for optimizing marketing and design efforts to sustain growth and player loyalty in the evolving mobile gaming sector.
