The Nintendo Switch 2 has achieved the strongest launch performance for a Nintendo machine in United Kingdom history, according to data from NielsenIQ. The console significantly outperformed the launch of the original Nintendo Switch—which faced notable supply constraints—by more than two to one, and surpassed the previous record-holder for the company, the 2010 Nintendo 3DS.
Despite this record-breaking internal performance, the Switch 2 does not rank as the highest-selling console launch in the UK market overall. When excluding handheld devices, the Switch 2 ranks fourth in unit sales and third in total revenue for console launches. It currently trails the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Xbox Series in unit volume, and sits behind the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series in terms of launch-period revenue.
The UK console market remains highly competitive, characterized by a balanced distribution of market share among the three major platform holders. Historically, this region has presented unique challenges for Nintendo; even the globally dominant Nintendo Wii and the original Nintendo Switch have faced stiff competition from rival platforms in the UK. The current rankings for console launches, which account for varying sales windows, place the Switch 2 behind established competitors like the PlayStation 3 and Xbox One, but ahead of the original Nintendo Switch and the Xbox 360. These findings highlight a successful regional debut for Nintendo that nonetheless reflects the persistent strength of rival hardware in the UK gaming landscape.
