Earlier in 2023, Riot Games issued a request for proposals (RFP) to find a partner for its League of Legends and Valorant tournaments.
Riot Games initiated a request for proposals (RFP) process in early 2023 to identify a third-party partner to manage its collegiate and scholastic esports operations in North America. The scope of the potential contract covers the administration of tournaments for the company’s flagship titles, League of Legends and Valorant, over a three-year term. The selected partner would be granted media, sponsorship, and partnership rights, provided they adhere to strict brand guidelines that prohibit associations with gambling, alcohol, crypto, adult entertainment, and military-related entities.
Industry participants identified as having submitted proposals include Ohio-based eFuse and Madrid-based GGTech, though reports indicate that eFuse withdrew its bid in May 2023. GGTech is widely considered the frontrunner for the contract, given its existing experience managing collegiate-level tournaments for Riot in Europe, including the Amazon UNIVERSITY Esports program. While initial reports suggested a requirement for bidders to maintain $3 million in working capital, subsequent clarifications indicated that this figure may instead represent a total payment obligation to Riot over the duration of the three-year agreement.
The move reflects a strategic effort by Riot Games to outsource the operational complexities of its North American scholastic ecosystem. The transition raises questions regarding the future of licensing for independent school programs that operate outside of the official publisher-sanctioned ecosystem. As of mid-2023, the selection process remained ongoing, with Riot Games maintaining a restrictive stance on sponsor categories to ensure alignment with its corporate brand standards.
