Many new mobile games in China are marketed as 'roguelike', with three appearing in the top 200 grossing list in May 2022.
High Demand. The Chinese mobile market continues to see a high volume of new releases claiming 'roguelike' status.
The mobile gaming market in China has seen a surge in the use of "roguelike" as a marketing buzzword, often applied to games that lack the genre's defining characteristics of permadeath and procedural generation. This analysis clarifies the distinction between traditional roguelikes, which are turn-based, grid-based dungeon crawlers, and the more casual "roguelite" games that have gained traction on mobile platforms. While true roguelikes are largely absent from top-grossing charts due to their inherent design and monetization limitations, roguelite titles have successfully adapted these mechanics to appeal to broader audiences.
Key findings indicate that while roguelite games generate significant interest and high download rankings, they face challenges in long-term monetization. On average, a roguelite game remains in the Chinese iOS top 200 revenue chart for approximately three months. Successful titles, such as Soul Knight, mitigate these challenges by incorporating permanent progression systems, social features, and incentivized advertisements. Other developers have opted to integrate roguelike mechanics into existing games through permanent special modes or limited-time live events, such as the "Recitativo di Fantasia" mode in Punishing: Gray Raven, to refresh gameplay and drive engagement without the risks associated with a full-scale roguelite production.
The analysis covers the Chinese mobile gaming landscape, specifically focusing on trends observed through May 2022. The methodology relies on market observation, tracking top-grossing iOS charts, and deconstructing game mechanics to evaluate the accurate application of genre terminology. The findings conclude that while the demand for roguelike-inspired gameplay remains high, developers must balance the genre's core mechanics with sustainable monetization strategies to achieve lasting success in the competitive Chinese market.
