The Esports Advocate
PlayVS and media company Urban One have entered a three-year partnership to establish a dedicated competitive gaming league for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). The initiative aims to address systemic barriers to entry in the esports industry, where Black professionals currently represent only about 5% of the workforce. By leveraging Urban One’s extensive media reach and cultural influence alongside the established collegiate infrastructure of PlayVS, the collaboration seeks to provide HBCU students with increased visibility, structured competition, and clearer pathways into professional gaming careers.
The program will formally launch as the National HBCU Esports Community in early 2027, with registration for interested institutions opening in the fall of 2026. Throughout the intervening months, PlayVS will conduct outreach to HBCU campuses to facilitate participation. Participating schools will have the opportunity to compete in both standard PlayVS College League offerings and exclusive, HBCU-focused invitational events designed to foster competitive momentum.
While the financial terms of the agreement remain undisclosed, the partnership represents a strategic effort to formalize and scale collegiate esports within the HBCU sector. Urban One will serve as an advisor and promotional partner, utilizing its content distribution network to amplify the league’s presence. This effort reflects a broader industry focus on diversity and inclusion, specifically targeting the intersection of cultural influence and professional opportunity for Black gamers within the North American collegiate landscape.
