Fee Elimination. PlayVS will no longer charge approximately $80 per student per season for high school esports participation.
PlayVS has announced a significant shift in its business model, eliminating participation fees for high schools and students across North America beginning with the 2024 season. Previously, the platform charged approximately $80 per student per season. This strategic pivot, led by CEO Jon Chapman, aims to remove financial barriers to entry and foster broader participation in scholastic esports. The company intends to sustain operations by shifting the financial burden from schools to corporate sponsors and partners, utilizing a model similar to the one employed by Chapman at his previous venture, EverFi.
The decision follows a period of internal leadership changes and public controversy regarding the company’s past competitive practices. Under new management, PlayVS has explicitly moved away from tactics that previously restricted schools from operating independent esports programs. This inclusive approach is supported by a recent collaboration with the Network of Academic and Scholastic Esports Federations (NASEF), which successfully piloted a free-access model within the California Interscholastic Federation.
The initiative is underpinned by data from a Fall 2023 survey of active coaches, which highlights the positive impact of esports on student development. Findings indicate that 90% of coaches observed improvements in student socialization, 74% noted benefits to mental health and life outlook, and 60% reported gains in academic performance or attendance. As the company moves toward this fee-free structure, it plans to rebuild its team and secure new partnerships, with initial announcements expected in the first quarter of 2024. The organization remains focused on scaling its reach across the United States and Canada while prioritizing collaborative growth within the scholastic esports ecosystem.
