This strategic shift diversifies revenue streams beyond traditional console hardware.
Portfolio Goal. PlayStation aims for PC and mobile titles to represent approximately 50% of its total first-party portfolio by fiscal year 2025.
PlayStation’s latest business strategy outlines a significant shift toward diversifying its revenue streams beyond traditional console hardware. The core thesis of this growth plan is to aggressively expand the company’s footprint in the PC and mobile gaming markets while simultaneously scaling its live service portfolio. By fiscal year 2025, the company aims for PC and mobile titles to represent approximately 50% of its total first-party portfolio.
Financial projections highlight a rapid acceleration in PC revenue, with expectations to reach $300 million for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2023. This represents a substantial increase from the $80 million and $35 million recorded in the two preceding years. Current performance data underscores the viability of this transition, with titles like Horizon Zero Dawn leading the segment with 2.3 million units sold and $60 million in lifetime revenue, followed by God of War and Days Gone.
To support these objectives, the company is implementing a multi-pronged approach to mobile and live service development. The mobile strategy involves both collaborating with third-party studios to leverage existing intellectual property and establishing internal teams dedicated to mobile-first development. Furthermore, the company is prioritizing live service games, aiming to launch at least 12 such franchises by fiscal year 2025. This expansion is heavily supported by the acquisition of Bungie, which is intended to provide the necessary expertise to transition from a single-title live service model—currently limited to MLB The Show 22—to a robust, multi-franchise ecosystem.
