Larian Studios experienced a period of unprecedented financial growth in 2023, primarily driven by the global launch of its title, Baldur’s Gate 3. Financial filings from the company’s Irish office reveal that Larian Group Holdings achieved a revenue of €427 million for the 2023 fiscal year, representing a 1,781% increase compared to the previous year. This surge in performance transformed the company’s financial position, resulting in a pre-tax profit of €249 million, a significant turnaround from the €214,000 loss recorded in 2022.
The commercial success of Baldur’s Gate 3 has had a broad impact on the studio’s operations and its external partnerships. Following the game's August 2023 release, the studio distributed €28 million in dividends to its employees and shareholders. Furthermore, the project generated substantial licensing revenue for Hasbro, which holds the rights to the Dungeons & Dragons intellectual property; the game contributed $90 million in royalties to the licensor during 2023, with additional payments expected in subsequent periods.
Despite the transition from a loss-making entity to a highly profitable studio, Larian remains a private company with significant external investment, including a 30% stake held by Tencent. The studio continues to see sustained engagement for its flagship title, with data indicating that daily active users and peak concurrent player counts have maintained or improved upon their performance more than a year after the game's initial launch. These results underscore the studio's successful self-publishing strategy and the long-term market viability of its recent development efforts.
