The HBCU Esports League, operated by Cxmmunity Media, officially launched its fourth season in September 2023. The league serves as a dedicated platform for collegiate esports within the United States, specifically focusing on Historically Black Colleges and Universities. The primary objective of the initiative is to foster diversity within the gaming industry while providing students with competitive opportunities and financial support for their education.
The fourth season features participation from 15 institutions, including Howard University, North Carolina A&T, Morehouse College, and Texas Southern University. A central component of the league is its $170,000 prize pool, which is distributed in the form of scholarships to participating students. To bolster the league’s visibility and mission, former NFL wide receiver Chad “OchoCinco” Johnson has joined as an official ambassador, citing a commitment to diversifying the gaming landscape.
The league maintains significant corporate backing, with partners such as Verizon, Discover, MTN Dew, and Hot Pockets returning to support the season. Competition is broadcast via Twitch, and the fall term is scheduled to conclude with the Discover Bowl on December 17. By combining competitive gaming with educational funding and high-profile industry partnerships, the league continues to establish a structured pathway for students at HBCUs to engage with the professional esports ecosystem.
