Since its release in September 2020, Genshin Impact ranks as the third highest-grossing mobile game globally.
Two years following its global launch, the mobile title Genshin Impact has solidified its position as a top-tier financial performer in the gaming industry. Data provided by Sensor Tower indicates that the game has generated $3.7 billion in total player spending since its release on September 28, 2020. This performance ranks it as the third highest-grossing mobile game globally, trailing only Tencent’s Honor of Kings and PUBG Mobile.
The game’s revenue is geographically diverse, with China contributing the largest share at 33% ($1.2 billion), followed by Japan at 24% and the United States at 17%. When excluding the Chinese market, the title rises to the second position in global player spending, trailing only Roblox. Furthermore, it holds the top spot among all gacha-monetized games, significantly outpacing competitors like Rise of Kingdoms and Three Kingdoms Strategic, which have each generated $1.7 billion.
Despite a broader downturn in the mobile gaming sector during 2022, the title demonstrated resilience with year-over-year growth of 16% and 28% in the first and second quarters, respectively. Analysts attribute this sustained success to a combination of an effective gacha monetization model and a consistent, industrial-scale live operations strategy that delivers regular content updates and new characters. While the game has maintained strong momentum, projections suggest a potential revenue deceleration in the third quarter of 2022. The findings highlight the title as the most significant new intellectual property launch on mobile since the debut of Honor of Kings.
