The industry recorded 567 closed deals in 2023, a significant decrease compared to the peak period of 2020–2022.
The global video game industry experienced a significant contraction in deal-making activity throughout 2023, with both the volume of transactions and total investment values falling by more than 50% compared to the peak period of 2020–2022. According to data from InvestGame, the industry recorded 567 closed deals in 2023. While the total disclosed deal value reached $85.1 billion, this figure was heavily skewed by the $68.7 billion Microsoft acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Excluding this singular transaction, the total deal value plummeted by 70% year-over-year to $16.4 billion.
The report highlights a challenging investment climate characterized by a sharp decline in private funding and public offerings. Private investments totaled $2.7 billion across 403 deals, while the public offering segment generated $4.2 billion—a substantial decrease from the $24.5 billion recorded in 2021, despite showing a modest recovery compared to 2022. Mergers and acquisitions also slowed, with 120 deals totaling $9.5 billion (excluding the Microsoft-Activision transaction), representing a volume twice as low as the three-year average.
Despite these headwinds, the industry remains resilient in specific areas. Bitkraft emerged as the most active venture capital firm, closing 18 deals with a total investment of $290.7 million. Analysts remain cautiously optimistic, noting that deal volume for private investments stayed above pre-pandemic levels. With early 2024 activity showing signs of momentum, including significant deals involving Disney and Epic Games, there is an expectation for a potential uptick in market activity should macroeconomic conditions stabilize.
