The Games Monitor 2024 provides a comprehensive analysis of the Dutch games industry, highlighting a period of financial growth contrasted by workforce contraction and declining market sentiment. Commissioned by the Dutch Games Association and funded by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, the report evaluates the industry's performance between 2021 and 2023.
The data reveals that the Dutch games sector achieved a record revenue of €763 million, representing a 10.5% increase over the two-year period. This growth was accompanied by a slight rise in the number of active game companies, which reached 614, primarily driven by the emergence of smaller studios. Conversely, the total industry workforce experienced a decline, shedding 269 positions to reach a total of 4,291 employees.
Technological and market trends indicate that nearly half of all Dutch studios have integrated generative AI into their workflows, predominantly for programming and concept development rather than final content creation. Developers maintain a strategic focus on PC and web-based platforms, largely avoiding the mobile market due to intense international competition. Additionally, the sector remains heavily invested in serious and applied games, with approximately 25% of studios developing content for healthcare, education, and law enforcement.
Despite the positive revenue trajectory, the industry outlook remains cautious. Fewer than 25% of studios express optimism regarding the future, citing global market instability and ongoing structural shifts as primary concerns. This sentiment reflects a broader industry tension between sustained financial output and the challenges of maintaining a stable, growing workforce in a volatile international landscape.
