This framework maps game mechanics directly to learning goals, providing a pedagogical lens for development. It ensures gameplay is goal-oriented, mitigating content bypass.
The Experience, Experiment, Evaluate (EEE) framework provides a comprehensive methodology for the design and assessment of experiential educational games. Its primary thesis posits that learning outcomes are significantly enhanced when game mechanics are systematically aligned with pedagogical objectives. By requiring players to master specific skills to progress, the framework ensures that gameplay remains goal-oriented, effectively mitigating the tendency for users to bypass content or exploit game systems without achieving genuine comprehension.
The framework functions by categorizing and clustering learning objectives, which are then reinforced through integrated, skill-based challenges. Empirical validation of this model across diverse titles, including the medical simulation Rashi and the historical simulation A Nation Divided, demonstrates that games designed according to these principles yield higher engagement and superior student performance. Statistical analysis confirms that tighter adherence to the EEE structure correlates directly with improvements in both the quantity and quality of user output, proving that the model is effective for both specialized pedagogical tools and broader entertainment-focused software.
Spanning the development and evaluation phases of serious game design, the EEE framework serves as a versatile instrument for creators and educators alike. By shifting the focus from superficial engagement to structured, mastery-based progression, the model provides a reliable standard for measuring educational efficacy. Ultimately, the framework establishes that when game features are intentionally coupled with clear, evaluative mechanics, the resulting experience fosters a more profound and measurable acquisition of knowledge, regardless of the specific subject matter or industry segment.
