Short-form video content has emerged as a primary driver for PC and console game discovery. It reaches audiences that traditional media and forums no longer capture effectively.
Shortform video has become a significant discovery channel for PC and console games, and this April 2026 GameDiscoverCo newsletter explains how it works with help from Mahdeen Abrar of Jestr, a company that pays small and mid-sized creators to post about games. GameDiscoverCo's Steam Fan Snapshot data shows shortform video as a key discovery method for 36% of respondents, ahead of Reddit-style forums (29%) and traditional media websites (28%).
Jestr's creators generated 100 million payout-eligible views in March 2026: 44 million on Instagram, 34 million on YouTube Shorts and 32 million on TikTok. Historically the mix was closer to 50% Instagram, 30% Shorts and 20% TikTok. The platforms differ in audience. Instagram Reels skews older and visual, favors cozy and horror games, and optimizes heavily for shares. TikTok has the youngest, most mainstream audience, where co-op "friendslop" thrives and viewers rarely know even major indie titles, as comments on a "what is Silksong?" video showed. YouTube Shorts overlaps with Reddit users, has a less curated algorithm, and offers more hardcore, critical commenters, giving niche games a chance.
Abrar identifies three creator types. Gameplay creators repurpose streams into fast edits, with friendslop, horror and surprisingly puzzle games performing well. Showcase creators work from trailers and B-roll with voiceover, can cover any genre, and may emphasize developer stories, though strategy and less visual games struggle. Real-world aesthetics creators pair attractive games with desk setups. The takeaway is that working with shortform creators helps clarify a game's "hook," and that dynamic genres suit the format better than others.
The issue also covers industry news: GTA Online revenue splits (PlayStation 64%, Xbox 33%, PC 3%), Meta Quest price increases driven by memory costs, Roblox's new age-based accounts, a PS5 pre-price-hike buying surge, and Hushcrasher's estimate of $27 billion in cumulative 2025 Steam game budgets. A paywalled Steam debut chart, led by Windrose, Pragmata and Mouse, is not included.
