Engineers form the core labor force within the industry. The average annual income for these professionals is 6.06 million yen.
The Japanese game industry is characterized by a workforce primarily composed of male university graduates in their mid-thirties, predominantly concentrated within large enterprises in the Kanto region. As of 2022, the sector reflects a professional landscape where engineers constitute the core labor force, earning an average annual income of approximately 6.06 million yen. While executive and management roles command the highest compensation, technical artists also represent a high-earning segment, with significant salary disparities persisting between large corporations and smaller firms.
The post-pandemic era has solidified remote work as a standard practice, with nearly three-quarters of developers operating outside traditional office settings. While this shift has enhanced perceived control over work-life balance, it has simultaneously introduced challenges regarding workplace support and interpersonal collaboration. Furthermore, while the industry has increasingly adopted flexible and discretionary labor systems, a notable gender gap remains regarding career transparency and expectations surrounding working hours.
Despite a progressive shift toward formalizing secondary employment policies, actual participation in side jobs remains low, as most professionals prioritize their primary roles. Similarly, while institutional support for childcare is widely available, the industry faces ongoing hurdles related to the uneven distribution of these benefits and a lack of awareness regarding existing programs. Addressing these disparities and improving the internal communication of corporate policies are essential steps for fostering a more equitable and sustainable career environment as the industry continues to evolve.
