The Japanese gaming industry, represented by the Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association, the Japan Online Game Association, the Mobile Content Forum, and the Japan eSports Union, has initiated a formal research project to address the classification of gaming disorder by the World Health Organization. The primary objective of this initiative is to move beyond speculation and establish a foundation of scientific evidence to guide effective, responsible industry responses. By prioritizing objective data, the coalition aims to address growing societal concerns regarding excessive gaming behaviors while ensuring the continued healthy development of the digital entertainment sector.
To ensure impartiality and academic rigor, the four industry organizations have commissioned an independent research committee led by Professor Akira Sakamoto. This group of external experts is tasked with designing and synthesizing comprehensive studies that examine the complexities of gaming disorder. By leveraging specialized academic expertise, the initiative seeks to provide a neutral framework for understanding the impact of gaming, thereby informing future policy and industry standards.
The scope of this effort encompasses the entire Japanese gaming landscape, including console, online, mobile, and competitive eSports sectors. While the project is currently in its developmental phase, the participating organizations have committed to maintaining transparency by providing regular updates on research progress through official channels. This collaborative approach reflects a proactive commitment to balancing industry growth with public health considerations, establishing a structured, evidence-based path forward for stakeholders navigating the evolving global discourse on gaming-related health issues.
