Capcom
Capcom’s financial performance for the first half of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2015, reflects a period of contraction compared to the same period in the previous year. Net sales fell significantly to 25.9 billion yen from 53.2 billion yen, while operating income declined to 4.3 billion yen from 7.5 billion yen. This downturn is primarily attributed to the absence of a major hit title comparable to the previous year’s launch of Monster Hunter 4, which had bolstered digital content sales. Despite the overall decline in revenue, the company successfully improved its operating margin by 2.8 percentage points to 16.9% through disciplined cost-cutting measures.
The decline in performance was broad-based across several segments. Digital content sales dropped by 24 billion yen, while the amusement equipment and arcade operations segments saw revenue decreases of 2 billion yen and 0.6 billion yen, respectively. Specifically, arcade operations experienced an 8% decline in existing store sales. Conversely, the pachinko and pachislo sub-segment provided a partial offset, as improved machine profitability contributed positively to earnings despite lower overall sales volume.
Balance sheet adjustments during this period highlight a strategic shift in capital allocation. Work-in-progress for game software increased by 5.2 billion yen, signaling continued investment in the development of future home video and online games. Concurrently, the company saw a reduction in trade receivables following the collection of payments from the previous fiscal year’s pachislo sales. Financing activities included an increase in short-term borrowings, which reached 10.2 billion yen by the end of the period. These results underscore the inherent volatility of the entertainment industry, where financial outcomes remain heavily dependent on the release cadence and market reception of key software titles.
