GungHo Online Entertainment
GungHo Online Entertainment’s FY2024 first-quarter financial results highlight a strategic shift toward global market expansion, particularly through the development and distribution of mobile and PC titles. The company’s primary objective is to increase its international presence by leveraging its established intellectual properties, such as the Ragnarok series, while maintaining steady engagement for domestic staples like Puzzle & Dragons.
Financial performance for the first quarter of 2024 shows a decline in both net sales and operating profit on a year-over-year basis. This downturn is attributed to a reactionary decrease in revenue from Ragnarok-related titles, which had benefited from significant regional launches in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau during the same period in 2023. On a quarter-over-quarter basis, however, operating profit improved due to a reduction in selling, general, and administrative expenses, specifically lower advertising costs, despite a slight dip in net sales.
The company’s geographic footprint has evolved significantly, with overseas net sales now accounting for 54% of total revenue. This growth is supported by the continued global rollout of Ragnarok Origin, which expanded into North, Central, and South America, as well as China, during the first quarter of 2024. Future growth plans include the upcoming release of new titles such as Ragnarok: Novice Hearts and Ragnarok: Rebirth across various Asian markets. Domestically, the company continues to focus on long-term operations for its core titles, evidenced by the 12th-anniversary events for Puzzle & Dragons and the 10th-anniversary milestones for Summons Board. The company remains committed to a pipeline of new console, PC, and smartphone titles to sustain its global development strategy.
