British Esports entered a strategic partnership with the Saudi Esports Federation in October 2023, aiming to foster international collaboration through cultural exchange programs, mentorship, and joint educational initiatives. The agreement includes plans for athlete development, research projects, and cross-border participation in events such as the Gamers8 tournament in Riyadh and activities at the National Esports Performance Campus in Sunderland. According to British Esports leadership, the collaboration is intended to facilitate knowledge sharing and provide a platform for dialogue regarding industry standards and inclusivity.
The announcement faced significant backlash from the esports community, which raised concerns regarding the human rights record of the Saudi government and the potential conflict between this partnership and British Esports’ stated commitment to supporting women and marginalized groups. Critics highlighted the perceived hypocrisy of the deal given the organization’s previous public advocacy for equality and LGBTQ+ rights.
In response to the controversy, British Esports CEO Chester King clarified that the organization is a non-profit entity and that no financial subsidies or capital exchanges are involved in the agreement. He emphasized that the partnership is self-funded and intended to secure a seat at the table to influence positive, incremental change within the region. Despite these assurances, the community response remained largely skeptical, reflecting ongoing tensions between the rapid expansion of Saudi-backed esports initiatives and the values held by Western esports stakeholders.
