The October 2018 analysis of Chinese-developed mobile games in overseas markets highlights a significant shift in consumer preference toward hyper-casual titles. Utilizing store intelligence data from Apple’s App Store and Google Play, the findings illustrate how rapid innovation in casual gameplay mechanics is increasingly challenging the market share of traditional, mid-to-heavyweight titles in global rankings.
Hyper-casual games dominated the top of the charts during this period. The puzzle game Hello Cats secured the number one position, achieving 24.73 million global downloads, with the vast majority of its traffic originating from Google Play. Similarly, the word-puzzle game Words Story reached the fifth position within just 25 days of its early October launch, demonstrating strong appeal in both Indian and American markets. These successes underscore the ability of developers to leverage micro-innovations and diverse themes to capture high volumes of users quickly.
Despite the surge in casual gaming, established mid-to-heavyweight titles maintained a notable presence. Tencent’s PUBG MOBILE held the third position, showing resilience against the influx of casual competitors. Meanwhile, Moonton’s Mobile Legends: Bang Bang recorded a 12% month-over-month increase in downloads, driven largely by its popularity in Southeast Asia. The data suggests that while hyper-casual games excel in raw download volume, specific mid-core titles continue to sustain growth through established player bases and regional dominance. Overall, the landscape for Chinese mobile games abroad remains highly competitive, characterized by a mix of rapid-fire casual releases and enduring, high-engagement titles.
