The Game Business
Spencer led the Xbox group since 2014 and will remain in an advisory capacity until summer 2026 to facilitate a leadership handoff.
Leadership Change. Phil Spencer is retiring as CEO of Microsoft Gaming after 12 years in the role.
Microsoft has announced a major leadership transition within its gaming division, confirming the retirement of long-time CEO for Gaming, Phil Spencer. Spencer, who has been with Microsoft for 38 years and led the Xbox group since 2014, will remain in an advisory capacity until the summer to facilitate a leadership handoff. Alongside this departure, Xbox president and COO Sarah Bond is also exiting the company.
The successor to the CEO role is Asha Sharma, formerly the head of coreAI at Microsoft and a former COO of Instacart. Matt Booty will remain with the organization, transitioning into the role of chief content officer. This restructuring follows a period of significant expansion for the Xbox brand, characterized by the acquisitions of major entities such as Activision Blizzard, ZeniMax, and Minecraft, as well as a strategic pivot toward a software and services-oriented business model.
In her initial commitments as the new head of gaming, Sharma emphasized a focus on delivering high-quality games, recommitting to the core Xbox console audience, and exploring the future of play through new business models. She explicitly stated an intention to avoid prioritizing short-term efficiency or the saturation of the ecosystem with AI-generated content, maintaining that games should remain human-crafted art. The transition signals a potential shift in organizational priorities, with industry observers noting the appointment of a leader with a strong background in AI as a reflection of Microsoft’s broader corporate focus on artificial intelligence.
