Ubisoft’s financial results for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2023, reveal a period of significant financial contraction characterized by a record operating loss of €585.8 million. Total sales declined by 14.6% year-over-year to €1.81 billion, while net bookings fell 18.3% to €1.73 billion. Despite these losses, the company saw a 23.3% increase in recurring revenue from in-game purchases and downloadable content, which reached €1 billion. Geographically, North America remained the primary market, accounting for 50% of net bookings, followed by Europe at 32%. By platform, mobile gaming experienced notable growth, increasing its share of total bookings from 9% to 31%.
In response to these results, the company has initiated a major restructuring program aimed at reducing operating expenses by over €200 million within two years. This strategy includes a workforce reduction of more than 700 employees since September 2022, the closure of five European offices, and the divestment of non-core assets. Despite these cuts, the company intends to expand its development capacity for the Assassin’s Creed franchise by 40%.
Looking forward, the company is pivoting toward a dual focus on free-to-play (F2P) titles and the integration of generative artificial intelligence. While maintaining a commitment to premium AAA titles, leadership is prioritizing the F2P model, citing encouraging performance in recent tests for titles like XDefiant. Furthermore, the company is actively exploring generative AI to optimize development workflows and enhance player experiences, leveraging its extensive library of proprietary data to lead this technological shift.
