The Game Development 101 session at Pocket Gamer Connects Digital #4, held in November 2020, served as a platform to highlight the decade-long evolution of the Jordanian gaming ecosystem. Organized in partnership with the King Abdullah II Fund for Development (KAFD), the event underscored the strategic importance of bridging the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region with the global game development industry. The primary objective was to showcase Jordan’s infrastructure and its growing capacity to support international publishers and developers seeking to enter the regional market.
A central focus of the discussion was the success of the Gaming Lab and the annual Gaming Summit, which have been instrumental in professionalizing the local industry. A key initiative highlighted is the App Challenge, an educational program targeting students aged 14 to 16. This program provides intensive training in game development tools like Unity, successfully transitioning young participants into professional roles within the industry. This year’s challenge featured nine finalist teams tasked with creating games centered on the societal impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The session also addressed the broader global context of the gaming sector, noting its resilience and growth during the pandemic. With the global industry reaching a valuation of approximately $170 billion, the speakers emphasized that game development has shifted from a perceived trivial pursuit to a vital, high-growth economic pillar. By fostering local talent and providing a bridge to international markets, Jordan aims to solidify its position as a hub for creative and technical excellence, demonstrating that the industry offers a stable and lucrative career path for the next generation of developers.
