The 2022 annual report from the Slovak Game Developers Association provides a comprehensive overview of the Slovak digital games industry, documenting a period of market correction following the rapid growth observed during the pandemic. The industry experienced its first decline in total turnover, falling from EUR 80 million in 2021 to EUR 77.1 million in 2022. This contraction aligns with broader global trends in the gaming sector, signaling a stabilization phase for local developers.
Despite the dip in revenue, the industry maintains a stable workforce of 1,080 professionals across 66 companies. The market remains highly concentrated, with the top 10% of firms generating EUR 65.3 million of the total turnover. Geographic distribution is similarly centralized, with 65% of companies located in or around Bratislava and 30% situated in the Košice region. The workforce composition includes 19% women and 9% international staff, with high demand persisting for specialized roles such as programmers, game designers, and animators.
Operational data reveals a robust development pipeline, with 49 original games released in 2022 and 282 projects currently in active development. The PC platform remains the primary focus for 72.7% of studios, followed by mobile platforms at 31.8%. A significant majority of these studios operate independently, with 65.2% relying on self-funding and 37.9% utilizing public funding to support their projects. These findings underscore a resilient, self-reliant ecosystem that continues to prioritize internal development and self-publishing despite the challenging economic climate.
