Total annual turnover for the sector fell to EUR 70 million, down from EUR 77.1 million in 2022.
The Slovak gaming industry experienced its first notable contraction in 2023, reflecting broader global market trends characterized by consolidation and reduced profitability. Total annual turnover for the sector fell to EUR 70 million, down from EUR 77.1 million in 2022. This decline is mirrored in the workforce, which decreased from 1,080 to 1,017 employees across 69 active game development companies. Despite these challenges, the industry maintains a stable economic structure, with the top 10% of firms generating 83.5% of the total turnover, indicating that smaller studios continue to sustain their market position relative to larger entities.
Geographically, the industry remains highly centralized, with 65% of companies operating in or near Bratislava and 29% located in the eastern region, particularly around Košice. The sector’s output remains robust, with domestic developers releasing 80 original titles and contributing to 157 collaborative projects in 2023. Currently, there are over 310 games in development, with PC serving as the primary target platform for 72.5% of these projects, followed by mobile devices and consoles.
The workforce composition highlights a focus on specialized talent, with 21% of employees identifying as women and 9% as foreign nationals. Programming, game design, graphic design, and marketing remain the most critical and difficult-to-fill roles within the industry. While the sector has faced a post-pandemic cooling period, the Slovak Game Developers Association continues to monitor these metrics to support the development of local talent and improve the overall business environment for game startups and established studios alike.
