See it on page 1The Slovak game industry demonstrated robust growth throughout 2021, characterized by a steady increase in both financial turnover and workforce expansion. With 63 active companies operating primarily in Bratislava and the Košice region, the sector reached an estimated annual turnover of EUR 84.7 million. This financial success is highly concentrated, as the top 10 percent of companies account for 86 percent of the industry's total revenue. The majority of these entities are private companies focused on original game development, with 70 percent of firms prioritizing their own intellectual property over commissioned work or outsourcing services.
Workforce development remains a critical pillar of the industry, with the total number of employees rising to 1,000 by 2021. The sector maintains a young demographic, with a median employee age of 32, and relies on a diverse talent pool, including 9 percent of staff recruited from abroad. Despite this growth, companies report significant challenges in recruitment, particularly for specialized roles such as programmers, game designers, and animators. Women currently represent 16.2 percent of the workforce, with the highest representation found in graphic design and production roles.
The industry’s output is heavily oriented toward PC and mobile platforms, with 71 percent of released games targeting Windows. Development is largely driven by self-funding, which supports 75 percent of projects, followed by public funding and commissioned work. While the COVID-19 pandemic exerted mixed pressures on financial stability and development velocity, the industry remains resilient. Looking forward, stakeholders identify a strong need for systemic support, specifically requesting increased research and development funding, enhanced public investment, and favorable tax incentives to sustain long-term competitiveness and innovation within the global market.
