The mobile gaming industry has experienced significant shifts in monetization strategies and revenue performance, as evidenced by data from Sensor Tower. In mid-2021, Riot Games successfully expanded its footprint in the mobile sector, surpassing $100 million in total revenue across three titles: League of Legends: Wild Rift, Teamfight Tactics, and Legends of Runeterra. League of Legends: Wild Rift served as the primary growth engine, contributing 60% of that total revenue, while the United States emerged as the leading market, accounting for 26% of the company’s mobile earnings.
By 2025, the broader mobile gaming landscape saw a pronounced pivot toward ad-based monetization. Advertising revenue in mobile games exceeded $12 billion across 19 tracked countries, including major markets like the United States, Japan, and India. This growth occurred alongside a stagnation in traditional in-app purchase (IAP) models. The share of mobile games utilizing ad monetization increased from 45.1% in 2021 to 55.6% by May 2026, with ads being shown 2.4 trillion times in 2025 alone.
Market dynamics reveal a clear divide between developing and mature economies. In developing regions such as India, ads accounted for over 70% of mobile game revenue, whereas in the United States, they represented only 22.1%. Casual and hyper-casual genres dominated the ad revenue landscape, collectively accounting for 80% of such earnings, with puzzle games leading the category. The market remains highly concentrated, as AppLovin and AdMob captured 65% of all ad revenue by May 2026. These findings underscore a long-term industry transition toward hybrid and ad-supported monetization models to sustain growth in an increasingly competitive global mobile market.
