Zimmerman, a former on-air talent, succeeds Jackie Felling in this role.
Riot Games has appointed Mark “MarkZ” Zimmerman as the new commissioner of the League of Legends Championship Series (LCS) for the 2024 season. Zimmerman, a former on-air talent and color analyst with extensive industry experience at organizations like Team Liquid and Curse, succeeds Jackie Felling. In this role, he will report to Carlos Antunes, the Head of League of Legends Esports for the Americas.
The appointment coincides with significant structural changes to the North American league. Following a mixed reception to the 2023 weekday broadcast schedule, the LCS will return to a weekend format for the 2024 season. Furthermore, the league is undergoing a contraction, reducing its number of franchised teams from 10 to eight. This shift includes the departure of Golden Guardians and Evil Geniuses, as well as the entry of Shopify Rebellion, which acquired a league slot for an estimated $10 million to $15 million.
The 2024 season is scheduled to commence on January 20. Zimmerman has indicated that he will spend the remainder of 2023 focusing on internal preparation and community engagement before the season begins. These developments reflect a broader effort by Riot Games to stabilize and refine the competitive landscape of its premier North American league amidst ongoing organizational and scheduling adjustments.
