IIDEA – Italian Interactive Digital Entertainment Association
The 2021 landscape report on the Italian esports sector provides a comprehensive economic analysis of the industry’s impact, growth trajectory, and operational structure. By synthesizing data from a bespoke market survey of key stakeholders—including esports teams, tournament organizers, and publishers—with external financial databases, the study establishes a clear picture of the sector's contribution to the national economy. The primary objective is to quantify both the direct impact, derived from employment and personnel costs, and the indirect impact, stemming from auxiliary services and related expenditures.
The total economic impact of the Italian esports sector is estimated at 45 to 47 million euros. Direct economic impact accounts for 30 to 31 million euros, with esports teams serving as the primary drivers, contributing 65% of this total. Conversely, the indirect economic impact, valued at over 15 million euros, is dominated by publishers, who account for 80% of secondary spending. The report highlights that the sector is characterized by a high value-added contribution per employee, significantly outpacing traditional entertainment and sports sectors in terms of economic efficiency per capita.
Beyond financial metrics, the study identifies a robust and rapidly expanding audience. Italy’s esports fanbase includes 1.62 million individuals aged 14 to 40 who engage with content multiple times per week, alongside 475,000 avid fans. This represents a 15% growth in the fanbase compared to the previous year, a rate that exceeds that of major European markets and traditional sports. While the industry benefits from its status as a modern entertainment medium and strong sponsorship potential, it faces structural challenges, most notably the lack of institutional economic incentives, a shortage of specialized professional skills, and a persistent technological infrastructure gap across different regions of the country.
