The studio is also prioritizing the completion of the Star Citizen 1.0 roadmap. These are key objectives for the organizational changes.
Cloud Imperium Games has initiated a significant leadership restructuring as part of a broader effort to finalize the development of its long-standing projects, Star Citizen and the single-player campaign Squadron 42. The primary objective of these organizational changes is to ensure the studio meets its upcoming release milestones, specifically targeting a 2026 launch for Squadron 42 and the realization of the Star Citizen 1.0 roadmap.
The recent personnel adjustments include the layoff of at least three executives who collectively possessed approximately 25 years of industry experience. These departures follow a series of earlier workforce reductions throughout 2024, which included approximately 100 job cuts and additional layoffs within the quality assurance department in November. While official communications frame these moves as necessary steps to streamline operations and focus on game playability, internal speculation suggests that cost-cutting measures and potential shifts in executive leadership roles are also driving the restructuring.
Despite these internal challenges, the studio maintains a substantial financial foundation. Star Citizen has secured over $770 million in crowdfunding from a base of more than 5.4 million backers. CEO Chris Roberts has publicly reaffirmed the company’s commitment to delivering both titles, noting that the studio experienced significant engagement in the past year, with over one million active players logging 32 million hours of gameplay. The current strategy reflects a pivot toward operational efficiency to conclude the development cycles of its flagship titles without further major delays.
