iOS spending increased by 6% to $13 billion. This growth counteracted a 1.3% decline in Google Play revenue, which totaled $7.3 billion.
The mobile gaming industry experienced a notable financial recovery in the first quarter of 2024, with global player spending surpassing $20 billion for the first time in two years. According to data from Sensor Tower, total quarterly revenue reached $20.3 billion, representing a 2.9% year-over-year increase. This growth was primarily driven by the iOS platform, which saw a 6% rise in spending to $13 billion, effectively offsetting a 1.3% decline in Google Play revenue, which totaled $7.3 billion.
Despite the positive revenue trend, global download volume continued to contract, falling 6.8% year-over-year to 12.8 billion installs. Genre performance was mixed; while the RPG category remained the highest-grossing sector globally at $4.56 billion, it faced a 13% decline in revenue. Conversely, significant growth was observed in the Lifestyle, Casino, and Puzzle genres. The Casino segment, in particular, benefited from the record-breaking performance of Monopoly Go!, which generated $770 million in quarterly revenue, surpassing the previous industry record held by Honor of Kings.
The top-grossing mobile titles remained largely stable, with Monopoly Go!, Honor of Kings, Royal Match, Roblox, and Candy Crush Saga occupying the top five positions. While Garena Free Fire led in total downloads, the market saw notable movement from newer titles like Wood Nuts & Bolts Puzzle and Pizza Ready!, as well as the late-quarter launch of Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile. These findings highlight a market environment where revenue growth is increasingly concentrated in specific high-performing titles despite a broader, ongoing decline in total app installation volume.
