A DiGRA 2023 study examines pornographic games sold on Steam after the platform began permitting uncensored adult content in 2018. The authors identified 452 tagged games or DLCs and analyzed a sample of 40 in detail, mapping the genres, mechanics, funding models, and narrative milieus that characterize the category. The work's central aim is to describe how sexual content is integrated into game design rather than simply appended to it, and to assess how adult titles compare economically with typical independent releases.
The analysis finds that visual novel and dating-sim mechanics are prominent, and that sexual content is generally tied to progression, often functioning as a near-guaranteed reward rather than a skill-dependent one. Puzzle-based titles tend to be simple, while adventure, RPG, and management games show growing hybridization of mechanics with sexual content, in some cases linking combat defeat to sexual violence, a combination the authors regard as unusual. Stylistically, cartoon visuals dominate the sample at 67.5%, and 3D titles frequently rely on third-party professional asset libraries. Around 43% of sampled titles were funded through Patreon, and many were released in early access.
Sales estimates suggest that adult titles perform somewhat better than typical indie games, though none in the sample exceeded $7 million. Narratives frequently adopt dramatic, teen-drama-style frameworks and draw on established drama, fantasy, horror, and crime conventions to heighten erotic or violent themes. Heterosexual or heterosexualized sex dominates the content, with only two games centered on male-male relationships. MMOs are absent from the sample, which the authors attribute to their high development costs.
