Alba: A Wild Life Adventure, a casual conservation-themed game, serves as the focus of a study that examines how players engage with human-environment relationships and climate-related themes through Steam reviews. The authors contend that games can raise environmental awareness and that pairing review text with player profile data yields more personalized insight into how distinct player types experience a game than reviews alone. The analysis draws on 1,356 public Steam reviews along with profile and showcase variables for each player, applying a Cross-Structural Topic Model and factor analysis to build a typology of players.
The analysis identifies 12 review topics and 7 player factors. The leading topic, "Casual & Relaxing," accounts for roughly 19 percent of reviews, reflecting the game's wholesome design, while themes of environmental awareness, warmth and music, and narrative are positively associated with engagement. Among the player types, "Inactive Users" (about 21 percent) and "Elite" (about 14 percent) are prominent, and factors such as Creator, Instructor, and Trader correlate with environmental themes, playtime, and creativity respectively. Negative feedback concerning bugs, pricing, and content length also appears, and the authors acknowledge that checklist-style reviews may distort some topic proportions.
The authors conclude that Alba's combination of serious environmental messaging and entertaining design blurs the boundary between "serious" and "entertainment" games. They argue that bottom-up, player-centered perspectives should guide analysis of climate-themed games in place of top-down classifications based on developer intention. A further finding concerns parenting: a "Parenting & Fun" topic is weakly or negatively correlated with other review themes and positively linked to the Inactive Users factor, suggesting parents purchasing the game for children. The study therefore supports game literacy in education and a focus on player experience in design and research.
Limitations include reliance on PC Steam reviews, possible review bias, and single-point-in-time profile data, all of which constrain generalizability beyond this single title and platform.
