Summary

OverActive Media, a Canadian-based esports organization, implemented a series of strategic staff reductions in March 2023. The restructuring involved the elimination of specific roles and the consolidation of responsibilities among remaining personnel. While the company officially characterized its operations as continuing in the normal course of business, industry reports suggest that between five and ten employees were affected, with the potential for further workforce adjustments in the future.

The layoffs impacted staff across the organization’s diverse portfolio, which includes the Call of Duty League franchise Toronto Ultra, the Overwatch League team Toronto Defiant, and the League of Legends EMEA Championship team MAD Lions. Specific departures noted include the team manager for Toronto Ultra and a marketing manager for the Madrid-based MAD Lions. Despite these personnel changes, the organization maintained that no major, company-wide layoffs were underway.

Concurrent with these staff cuts, the organization announced an expansion of its competitive footprint through the launch of an all-women Valorant roster, MAD Lions Laurë. This team was formed to compete in the Valorant Game Changers circuit, signaling a continued investment in specific esports segments even as the broader corporate structure underwent internal realignment. The company’s actions reflect a broader trend of operational efficiency and strategic pivoting within the competitive gaming industry during the early months of 2023.
