The company will not compete in Overwatch 2 esports for the 2025 season. This marks OverActive Media's exit from the title.
OverActive Media has officially announced the discontinuation of its Toronto Defiant brand, marking the company’s exit from Overwatch 2 esports for the 2025 season. CEO Adam Adamou confirmed that the organization is retiring the brand entirely, noting that any potential future return to the title would not involve the Defiant name. This decision follows a period of transition for the competitive landscape, as the original Overwatch League—in which the Toronto Defiant participated as an expansion team since 2018—was replaced by the Overwatch Championship Series in 2024.
The strategic shift represents a narrowing of OverActive Media’s competitive focus. While the company is stepping away from Overwatch, it maintains its commitment to other major esports titles. The organization continues to operate its Call of Duty League team, Toronto Ultra, and remains active in the League of Legends EMEA Championship and the Valorant Champions Tour through its ownership of European entities including MAD Lions, KOI, and Movistar Riders.
The announcement was communicated by leadership following initial confusion regarding the team's future, which stemmed from a previously released promotional video that did not fully reflect the final decision to shutter the brand. Despite the closure, the company acknowledged the long-term support of key sponsors, including Bell, TD Canada, and AMD, who backed the team throughout its tenure in the Overwatch ecosystem.
