The company reported its total net revenue for the three-month period ending June 30, 2024.
NetEase’s financial performance for the second quarter of 2024 reflects a period of revenue growth within its gaming division, contrasted by an unexpected decline in overall profitability. For the three-month period ending June 30, 2024, the company reported total net revenue of 25.5 billion yuan ($3.5 billion), representing a 6.1% increase year-over-year. However, net income fell by 17% to 6.8 billion yuan ($930 million), a result that missed analyst expectations and triggered a 13% decline in the company’s share price.
The gaming division served as the primary driver of revenue, contributing 20.1 billion yuan ($2.8 billion), a 6.7% increase compared to the previous year. Within this segment, online games accounted for 96.1% of total revenue, with mobile titles representing 76% of that figure. Key contributors to this performance included the continued success of live-service titles such as Naraka: Bladepoint, which achieved record-high daily active users, and Justice Mobile. Additionally, the launch of the shooter Once Human, which surpassed 10 million downloads, bolstered the company’s quarterly results.
Strategic developments during the quarter included the renewal of a publishing agreement with Blizzard, facilitating the return of World of Warcraft to the Chinese market. Looking forward, the company maintains a robust pipeline of upcoming titles, including the 5v5 shooter FragPunk and the global release of Marvel Rivals. Despite the growth in gaming revenue, the broader profit miss highlights ongoing challenges in maintaining margins amidst shifting market conditions and performance fluctuations in other segments of the business.
