NetEase’s in-game items exchange platform, Buff, has secured a title sponsorship deal with the Chinese esports organization Rare Atom for its Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) squad. As a direct result of this partnership, the team has officially rebranded to Rare Atom Buff. While the financial terms of the agreement remain undisclosed, the move signals a strategic investment by the platform into the professional CS:GO landscape.
The sponsorship arrives during a period of heightened commercial interest in the Counter-Strike ecosystem, driven by the announcement of Counter-Strike 2 and the subsequent scheduling of its first major tournament for March 2024. Rare Atom, formerly known as Vici Gaming, is recognized as one of the top-performing Chinese teams in the discipline. This partnership highlights the growing market value of competitive CS:GO teams as the industry prepares for the transition to the new game title.
The scope of the deal is limited to the organization’s CS:GO division. It is unlikely to extend to Rare Atom’s League of Legends squad, which competes in the League of Legends Pro League (LPL). This limitation is attributed to the competitive nature of the Chinese gaming market, as Buff is owned by NetEase, a direct rival to the conglomerate Tencent, which operates the LPL.
