The Esports Advocate
The Japan e-Sports Union (JeSU) has secured official recognition as an associate member of the Japan Olympic Committee (JOC). This status, which remains effective through March 31, 2027, marks a significant milestone in the formal integration of competitive gaming into the broader Japanese sports landscape. The primary objective of this partnership is to streamline the participation of Japanese esports athletes in international multi-sport events, specifically targeting the 20th Asian Games scheduled for 2026 in Nagoya, Aichi.
JeSU, currently chaired by Konami Digital Entertainment president Hideki Hayakawa, has a history of facilitating athlete representation at major regional competitions, including the 2018 Asian Games, the 2022 Asian Games, and the 2023 East Asian Youth Games. The organization’s success in securing medals at these events previously earned it the TEAM JAPAN Commander’s Award from the JOC, providing the foundation for this expanded institutional relationship.
By leveraging its new associate membership, JeSU intends to foster deeper collaboration with established national sports organizations. The federation aims to use this alignment to drive the continued development and popularization of esports across Japan. This development underscores a broader trend of aligning esports governance with traditional Olympic structures to enhance legitimacy and support for professional players within the region.
