GungHo Online Entertainment
GungHo Online Entertainment’s financial results for the fiscal year ended December 31, 2017, reflect a period of transition characterized by declining revenue from its core title, Puzzle & Dragons, alongside strategic efforts to pivot toward e-sports and global distribution. Net sales for the fiscal year reached 92,306 million yen, representing a 17.9% decrease year-on-year. Operating income similarly declined by 25.4% to 34,384 million yen, as the company balanced the gradual maturation of its flagship game with increased investments in new development projects.
The company’s primary revenue driver, Puzzle & Dragons, continued to see a slight decrease in sales, though it maintained a significant user base with over 47 million downloads in Japan as of November 2017. To mitigate this decline, management focused on long-term user retention through consistent content updates, collaborations, and the implementation of a battle mode in the companion app, Puzzle & Dragons Radar. Concurrently, the company launched the Puzzle & Dragons Project 2018, which aims to revitalize the brand through e-sports initiatives, new media, and merchandise.
Geographically, the company’s consolidated subsidiary, GRAVITY Co., Ltd., provided a positive performance contribution, particularly through the success of the smartphone game Ragnarok M in the Asian market. While overall advertising expenses were reduced by 4,749 million yen through improved operational efficiency, the company continued to allocate resources toward domestic television marketing for its core titles. Despite the year-over-year contraction in financial metrics, the company maintains a focus on extending the lifecycle of its smartphone games by leveraging their online-centric features to foster sustained engagement and long-term value creation.
