This agreement was established in 2024 between the IOC and the Saudi Arabian government.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has officially confirmed that the inaugural Olympic Esports Games will be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in 2027. This event serves as the primary outcome of a 12-year partnership agreement established in 2024 between the IOC and the Saudi Arabian government. The Esports World Cup Foundation (EWCF) has been designated as a founding partner, tasked with facilitating the games alongside the Saudi Olympic and Paralympic Committee (SOPC).
A joint steering committee, composed of six members split equally between the IOC and the SOPC, is currently responsible for determining the specific competitive titles to be included in the event. While the roadmap for the games is now established, the selection process remains a point of contention. The IOC maintains a strict policy against including games with violent content, and there is ongoing concern regarding the influence of member federations, which have previously prioritized lesser-known titles linked to their own financial interests over established, top-tier esports games.
The collaboration represents a significant expansion of the Olympic brand into the digital competitive space, though it has faced criticism regarding the IOC’s human rights commitments. The partnership is expected to rely heavily on the infrastructure and expertise of the ESL FACEIT Group, which operates under the Savvy Games Group, chaired by the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia. This development marks a definitive step in the IOC’s long-term strategy to integrate esports into the global Olympic framework.
