Create free accounthello and welcome to Pocket Gamer dog bizzy's YouTube channel I'm John Jordan and the game looking at today is hovercraft takedown so this is a Crossy road type game I guess cross the road needs wipeout is is one way of looking at it blocky graphics and ring nice bits of the game and more on the monetization side so this is the the splash screen BC kind of standard for things this is my kind of a ship your plane to descend upon cessation so we get some free mini card pack for freeing Cena just under an hour's time I'm gonna get the mini card pack for free or I could buy it now with soft currency the dollars or there's a fun card pack so there's a card kind of situation going on if I kind of power-ups and suchlike then the standard retailing epic starter pack a coin double expecting coins so standard things in lot of endless runner games which this is you know to degree related to so I can pay four pounds that's six
dollars and I can double up form away all the costs off currency the dollars I get by dollars it's not very soft currencies a heart on TV I suppose basis the software the to and then there is these other currencies so fellow care these are different crafts this is the first one you get the police roadster so there's other London around you can see the bottom and kind of the police only has two weapon stations unlocked so the world pitbull has three the sky would jet I have us three if you go 48 more more weapon systems towards the end obviously we can see this is going to cost $20 or 300 of the hard currency and of course all that called the moon orange cubes I've only got 62 of those so I can't buy the moment things he five up in systems there what on earth is that horizon ghosts anyway so let's go back to the splash screen so let's go and play and you'll kind of
see how it works so very simple just move left and right you see I've got the three weapon systems there as you blow up these things they fly in the air these pickles they fly they have to avoid the debris and I pick up the currency it's more complicated as you go on like cooking mines at the red cube backwards in mine so it's kind of a risk we'll war theme blowing them up there anyway I've got back there nice physics kind of system so you see that cause mines out the back so you kind of want to get close enough to collect the gold but you don't know so let's get back by the Oh get whacked by the debris so it's a little bit moving along planes how you to say my weapons once a butter systems offline now two weapon systems offline now so I've only got this and laser thing a lot of them I'm not collecting these gold things you see there's kind of a right-hand corners
Highschool going on oh and now you know still just about going for the crash crash crash scene see anything offline ran things now and not really pretty Bible as a flying machine that one does that mean okay so normally this stage and you can do it you can just give me some screenshots and saying get a car pack get free coins so this is kinda standard we can go in and watch yeah a a four mile off strike from machine zone which seems to be the head everyone sees all the times that's when machines and spending a lot of you a money so that's fair enough rewarded video ads are that the big thing that players like and
developers like as opposed like them but the other thing so that is I've watched that ad now there we go from Unity ads I've owned 50 coins but kind of interesting in most these endless runners what would have happened was he said you would have crashed and it said you want to start again in order to get another life continue on so this is kind of a we really would integration where okay I've only 50 coins but probably what I want to do is continue playing the game so it's kind of odd that they've chosen to do that and then this is the oddest thing so so that that whoa where'd that come from so I finished the game I've already watched in that and then I get this I had just thrown at me there's no there's no opt-in to it and this is this seems to me one I want how much you know how much money they generate from this kind of stuff probably not very much and to it's really kind of poor Etica I think for a free-to-play game now you know this is kind of maybe three or four years ago you could get away this kind of stuff but now people because reward video ads
is so valuable and have worked so well if they interacted properly into the into the flow over games have their like adjuster I mean just look at you know vaguely animated you know but very kind of poor quality ad really I'm not sure that's from unity and it might be but and that just seems really odd a really odd way to put an ad particularly I've just seen a video and you kind of think they would take that one away cause I've earned then the developer some money by watching a rewarded video ad so then to throw like a low quality low value add into the into my face thing it just seems very very odd thing to do and I think this is sometimes where some developers yeah I think this is a rematch game it's not it's not gonna do a Crossy road type thing it's not the killer queue characters but I think there's some really nice physics I think I like their kind of you know some more I guess a more male oriented kind of weapon type game but it's really nice the way the kind of systems come offline and I think the while the upgrade system on the LaCrosse as well is it could be
could be made easier to understand really I think there's a nice game here but just the way the integration of the monetization of the indirect monetization has been handled is really abrupt and I think this is the kind of developers have to avoid now really um you have to have a nice game to have retention and get them coming and playing and being engaged in the game and what kind of stuff that is the color core it's always been the core of good games obviously good gameplay and now it's still the free-to-play games is still in the core but in the way you let you layer direct monetization so buying stuff that's primary whether there's a shop where if you want to get in the big ship with five weapon systems we can just buy it for $20 straight away that's fine but just his indirect stuff is it's a bit harder to get rioting and that one thing this is an example of a developer not getting it quite right so no thanks watching never get to subscribe to our YouTube channel so we do a lot this analysis of free-to-play mobile games that's what we do so that's kind of thing you like please do subscribe and then you won't miss a thing
Effective monetization in free-to-play mobile games relies on the seamless integration of rewarded video ads, which serve as a critical indirect revenue stream. Hovercraft Takedown, an endless runner title featuring physics-based combat, illustrates both the potential and the pitfalls of these implementations. While the game successfully employs standard monetization mechanics—such as soft currency, hard currency, and starter packs—its approach to video advertising highlights a disconnect between player experience and revenue optimization.
The primary issue lies in the game’s failure to align ad placement with player incentives. In most successful endless runners, rewarded video ads are strategically offered as a "continue" mechanic, allowing players to revive after a crash. Hovercraft Takedown instead uses ads primarily for small currency rewards, missing the opportunity to leverage the player's desire to extend their gameplay session. Furthermore, the game occasionally forces low-quality, non-opt-in ads upon the user immediately after they have already engaged with a voluntary rewarded video. This abrupt, intrusive transition undermines the value of the rewarded ad and risks damaging user retention.
Ultimately, the core of a successful free-to-play title remains high-quality gameplay and engaging mechanics. While Hovercraft Takedown features compelling physics and a robust upgrade system, its monetization strategy suffers from poor execution. Developers must prioritize a balanced flow where indirect monetization enhances, rather than interrupts, the user experience. By failing to integrate ads into the natural rhythm of the game, the developer risks alienating the player base, demonstrating that even a well-designed game can be hindered by suboptimal ad placement strategies.
