Game developers use AI bots to provide a more accessible entry point into competitive environments. This strategy helps improve player retention.
Skill Gap. AI bots help new players overcome the skill gap in competitive games.
The integration of artificial intelligence bots into the gaming industry presents a dual-natured impact, functioning as both a tool for player retention and a mechanism for exploitation. The primary thesis posits that while bots can effectively bridge the skill gap for new users, they simultaneously threaten the integrity of competitive and economic environments when used to automate progression or exploit human emotional behavior.
In the context of battle royale titles like Fortnite and PUBG, bots serve as a strategic onboarding mechanism. By populating matches with AI opponents, developers provide novices with a lower-pressure environment to master game mechanics and achieve positive reinforcement, which is essential for long-term player retention. This approach addresses the significant skill disparity inherent in massive player bases, such as Fortnite’s 78.3 million monthly active users, by allowing beginners to experience success without being immediately overwhelmed by veteran players.
Conversely, the deployment of bots in other genres, such as online poker and massively multiplayer online games (MMOs), often undermines the human experience. In poker, bots utilizing Game Theoretical Optimum strategies exploit the emotional decision-making of human players, effectively removing the element of chance and human interaction that defines the game. Similarly, in MMOs like World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy, automated farming bots harvest resources and currency to accelerate progression or facilitate real-money trading on third-party markets. These practices can degrade the gaming experience for legitimate players by flooding economies and diminishing the value of human effort. Ultimately, the role of AI in gaming remains a tension between enhancing accessibility for new users and replacing the authentic human interaction that sustains competitive and social play.
