Male gamers predominantly play multiplayer-heavy genres like Shooters and Battle Royale. Female gamers over-index on solo, casual genres such as Puzzle, Simulation, and Platformers.
The 2020 Female Gamers Survey examines the gaming habits, perceptions, and experiences of 2,006 gamers aged 16 and older across the United Kingdom and the United States. By including both male and female participants, the study provides a comparative analysis of how gender influences engagement with the gaming industry. The findings highlight a significant divide in how different genders interact with gaming culture, particularly regarding online social environments and the prevalence of toxicity.
Data indicates that while women represent nearly half of the gaming population, they are less likely than men to identify as "proper gamers," despite averaging eight hours of gameplay per week. Preferences also diverge by gender: men gravitate toward multiplayer-heavy genres like shooters and battle royale titles, whereas women favor solo or casual experiences such as puzzle and simulation games. This preference is partly attributed to a widespread awareness of online toxicity. While approximately 60% of all gamers report experiencing abuse, the nature of this harassment differs significantly. Women are disproportionately targeted with sexually inappropriate content, graphic threats, and stalking.
These experiences have tangible consequences for industry participation. Female gamers are more likely to feel intimidated by online environments, leading many to hide their gender or avoid voice chat to mitigate the risk of harassment. Furthermore, only 20% of female respondents believe the industry has adequate processes to address discrimination. Consequently, women are more likely to perceive the gaming industry as sexist and masculine, whereas men are more inclined to view it as inclusive and innovative. The study concludes that the industry must prioritize clear codes of conduct and improved support mechanisms to foster a safer, more equitable environment for all players.
