The European Olympic Committee (EOC) has announced the launch of its inaugural Esports Championship, scheduled to take place from June 30 to July 2, 2023, in Katowice, Poland. Held in conjunction with the European Games Kraków-Małopolska, the event serves as a strategic integration of competitive gaming into the broader European sporting landscape. The championship will feature both open and women’s categories, with competitions hosted at the International Congress Center.
The event will showcase two specific titles: Rocket League and eFootball 2023. These games were selected based on their high popularity and their alignment with the International Olympic Committee’s esports policy, which prioritizes non-violent, sport-centered digital competition. The Global Esports Federation played a significant advisory role in the selection of these titles, mirroring their involvement in other recent Olympic-affiliated esports initiatives.
Beyond the core tournament, the EOC plans to host two supplementary programs: the GEFestival, a cultural celebration of esports, music, and entertainment, and GEFcon, a professional convention designed to facilitate knowledge sharing among international leaders in business, technology, and sports. This multi-faceted approach underscores a broader effort to formalize the intersection of traditional sports governance and the growing esports industry.
