The Game Business
The specialist publication, focused on technical analysis of gaming hardware and software, concluded its tenure under IGN.
Digital Foundry, a prominent specialist publication focused on technical analysis of gaming hardware and software, has officially transitioned to a fully independent business model. This move marks the conclusion of its tenure under IGN, which had acquired the brand as part of its broader 2024 purchase of Gamer Network. The separation represents a strategic shift for the outlet, which originally launched in 2015 as a joint venture with Gamer Network before undergoing subsequent ownership changes under ReedPop and IGN.
The decision to regain independence is framed by the leadership at Digital Foundry as a necessary step to chart a self-determined course within an increasingly volatile games media landscape. Richard Leadbetter, the owner of Digital Foundry, emphasized that the team’s long-term goal has consistently been to operate as an independent entity, relying on community support to sustain its specialized content. The transition was facilitated with the support of Gamer Network founder Rupert Loman and the cooperation of IGN.
This development occurs against a backdrop of significant instability in the gaming media sector, characterized by widespread redundancies and corporate restructuring. While IGN continues to manage other properties such as GamesIndustry.biz and Eurogamer, the departure of Digital Foundry highlights the ongoing challenges and realignments facing legacy media brands. By returning to an independent structure, Digital Foundry aims to leverage its niche expertise to maintain its position as a technical authority in the industry.
